Hong Kong still world’s largest cargo airport

According to the latest data from the industry association Airport Council International (ACI), Hong Kong Airport will remain the world‘s leading location for air freight in 2024.

According to the latest data from the industry association Airport Council International (ACI), Hong Kong Airport will remain the world‘s leading location for air freight in 2024. With a cargo volume of around 5 million tons, the airport recorded an increase of 14.1 per cent compared to the previous year and an increase of 2.7 per cent compared to 2019, the last year before the pandemic.

Shanghai-Pudong Airport is again in second place with around 3.8 million tons, which corresponds to an increase of 9.8 per cent compared to 2023. Memphis in the USA remains in third place with 3.7 million tons, albeit with a decline of 3.3 per cent compared to the previous year and a significant drop of 13.2 per cent compared to 2019. The strong growth of several Asian airports is striking. Guangzhou recorded an increase of 16.9 per cent compared to 2023 and even 23.6 per cent compared to 2019. Taipei, with growth of 7.5 per cent compared to 2023, also shows significant development. Overall, five of the ten largest cargo airports are located in Asia. The USA continues to account for a strong share with four airports, with Louisville standing out in particular with an increase of 15.6 per cent compared to 2023. (rok)
